Oklahoma and Route 66
Day 2 Ended In Tulsa.
We made our way into Oklahoma and stopped for the night in Tulsa. We went to dinner and had a great steak at the Cattleman's Steak House near our hotel and we also stopped by 2 Harley shops for stuff. 404 miles today and 686 miles trip total.
Before we left Tulsa, we had to go check out Tulsa’s Giant Oilfield Worker. From there we went over to another Route 66 historic site, East meets West which is the unofficial halfway point from Los Angeles to Chicago on old Route 66.
After Leaving Tulsa, it was on to Oklahoma City to visit the Oklahoma City Federal Building Bombing Memorial site. This is a must see. A memorial is supposed to remind us of something. This memorial freezes a moment in time and memorializes the lives of all those men, women and children that where lost that day.
On the morning of April 19, 1995, a truck bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building at 9:02am, the massive explosion occurred which sheared the entire north side of the building, killing 168 people. Including men, women and children from the daycare located in the building.
Notice that some of the chairs are smaller than others, for each of the children killed that day.
The chairs also light up at nighttime.
After the explosion people started to bring flowers and other tributes to the people that had been killed or injured in the explosion and placing them on or near the fence put up to keep people out of the disaster area. This practice continues to this day.
Visiting a site like this leaves you flooded with many different emotions from sadness to anger and wondering why or how someone could do this to innocent people and children.
Part of taking a road trip like this is a spiritual thing, becoming one with the wind and totally at the mercy of the elements of the weather and discovering places and people that you have never experienced before.
After leaving Oklahoma, we made our way down the road to Amarillo, Texas to the Big Texas Steak Ranch and a quick stop at the Cadillac Ranch for some pictures and then on the road again to New Mexico and stop for the night in Tucumcari, NM. This was a 500 mile day broken up into several stops to sight see and take in some liquids.
Tucumcari New Mexico
Next day coming soon.
